What do dolmades, Zorba, baklava and Effie all have in common? They will all play starring roles at the Paniyiri Greek Festival.

Musgrave Park

Stand back and make way for some big hair because Greek goddess Effie is coming to town to headline the annual Paniyiri Greek Festival. This shindig is the largest ethnic festival in Australia and celebrates everything Greek from Homer to honey puffs. Held on the lawns of Musgrave Park and The Greek Club in South Brisbane, the activities are endless including the newest and probably most amusing event, “So, You Think You Can Zorba.” The festival will also take the opportunity to celebrate the handing over of the Olympic flame from Athens to Beijing but, besides from that, grape stomping, olive and honey puff eating competitions, Hellenic dancing, bands and DJ's are bound to keep even the most grumpy punters entertained.

Food wise, the 30 or so stalls will present a startling range of traditional dishes, recipes and secrets. Sample the exotic flavours of dolmades, haloumi and souvlaki or swap spice for sweet and try the deliciously sticky baklava. If Greek cuisine is as mystifying to you as Plato's ponderings, head to The Greek Club where cooking demonstrations and cultural lectures will take place. If you fancy a more spiritual experience, an exhibition of Church regalia and Church tours will also be held in the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George. The festival runs from 2pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday. It cost $7 for adults, $2 for pensioners and children under 13 years old get in for free. For more information call (07) 3357 9054 or visit www.paniyiri.com.
